Go Green launches to packed business audience

Published on by Go Green.

We were absolutely delighted to welcome a staggering 397 people to the launch of Go Green on Tuesday 10th February 2015!

With delegates representing almost 300 organisations from across the region, the Go Green launch event was opened by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Alastair Watson and was enjoyed by an attentive crowd, who heard about the importance of the Go Green programme and how it will help them achieve their green business ambitions.

As well as presentations by our project team: Nina Skubala, Amy Robinson and Jessica Ferrow, we heard presentations from Steve West, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West of England; Liz Zeidler Chair of the Bristol Green Capital Partnership; and Andrew Garrad, Chairman of Bristol 2015 – all of whom made a strong business case for going green. The presentations will be available online in the next few days.

We invited some local not-for-profit organisations who are referenced in the Go Green tool to bring stalls and give 60 second pitches to explain how they can help local businesses, including the Bristol Reuse Network, Climate South West and the Bristol Pound. There was great buzz of conversation between delegates during the networking sessions with all types of enterprise represented, from multinational corporations to work-from-home micro businesses; all of whom can get involved in the Go Green programme.

We heard from the creators of the Go Green Tool, Sheri-Leigh Miles and Jimmy Brannigan from NETpositive Futures – who demonstrated how to get the most out of the tool. Having access to the Go Green tool is like having a sustainability expert in your pocket, and their demo showed how easy it is for businesses with no prior sustainability experience to create a free, bespoke action plan that signposts to local initiatives and further information, and allow them to track and show progress.

The Go Green programme has been designed with core funding from Bristol 2015 Ltd and is run by Business West and Low Carbon South West, to help businesses of all sizes and types, irrespective of how ‘green’ they already are.

“We want to ensure that every business in the region has the chance to benefit from the awareness created by the European Green Capital award. We want to celebrate the success of our greenest companies, but also encourage many more to seize this opportunity to become greener, save money and find new customers”.

In the 24 hours since the event, 25 businesses have now signed up and created their action plans – what a brilliant start!

We also wanted to note that At-Bristol were fabulous hosts. They provided a great demonstration of how to run a sustainable event – with Fairtrade tea, coffee and biscuits provided in the breaks. Chris Dunford, Sustainability Manager gave a memorable presentation outline At-Bristol’s enviable list of green technologies, from LED lights in the car park to Bristol’s largest solar array a composting unit on the green roof and even their own robotic peregrine falcon seagull deterrent.

The popularity of the launch event is testament to the demand that we know exists amongst the forward-thinking businesses of the region, who know that their future success depends on building a greener, more resilient business community, fit for the changing times in which we now live.

We can’t wait for you to create your action plan and join us!
